ATI fglrx proprietary driver install on Debian linux

1) If you installed any other ATI driver uninstall them at this time. Download the ATI driver package from ATI's website.

2) Switch to another terminal (press CTRL+ ALT + F1) and login as root (you will need to have enabled your root account to do this). Stop X Windows using the following command:

/etc/init.d/gdm stop or /etc/init.d/kdm stop depeding on the login mangager you have.

3) Find any existing "fglrx.ko" files and delete or backup somewhere. The "find" command will help you to find them.

find / -name fglrx.ko

4) Convert the ATi fglrx driver .rpm file to a .deb package using alien. apt-get install alien if you need to. Switch to the directory with the driver package in first then use alien:

alien [driver package name]

5) Install the driver package:

dpkg --force-overwrite -i [driver package name].deb

NOTE: If you are updating from a previous ATi driver release please ensure drivers have been uninstalled using Apt-get/synaptic first and that the /lib/modules/fglrx directory has been deleted (along with any fglrx.ko files as in step 3)!

6) Build the kernel module:

rmmod fglrx
cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
sh make.sh
cd /lib/modules/fglrx
sh make_install.sh
mkdir /lib/modules/[kernel version]/misc
cp fglrx.ko /lib/modules/[kernel version]/misc/
depmod -ae
fglrxconfig
modprobe fglrx

7) Now the modules is loaded and fglrxconfig should have created your XF86Config file. fglrxconfig did not work for me (See below) but you may have better luck. Start gdm or kdm again.

/etc/init.d/gdm start or /etc/init.d/kdm start

8) Go back to your X server terminal (CTRL+ ALT + F7) and hopefully you have a login prompt. Good Luck!

If you have a dual head ATI vid card and want to get both heads working look below.

I have an ATI X300 Dual head video card. I've had a devil of a time getting dual heads working with this card. I finally did. Running ATI's configuration script did not help as X would only start on one monitor at a time. I finally found an XF86config that works and I'm posting it here because I don't want to loose it. Also, for anyone else who wants it. This config uses "Big Desktop" (one big framebuffer).
